The Story

Synopsis

Vusi Duma is a former drug addict and ex-con man who had a religious conversion in prison. He has now fallen into abject poverty and survives from scavenging the trash in rich neighbourhoods. One day he finds a bag of expensive jewellery in the trash, which he only discovers after he gets home and he can’t remember where exactly he found it. While his wife is rejoicing, he is conflicted. He decides to take it to the police. This decision upends his life and brings him in a collision course with several characters.

Jeannie and Michael (a plumber) are the couple in front of whose house he found the jewellery. It was their domestic servant who mistakenly threw the bag of jewellery away, but in actual fact this couple had stolen it themselves from a client of Michael. Ngonyama, a local thug, is hired by Jeannie to find Vusi and make him retrieve the jewellery from the police. When Vusi refuses to cooperate with Ngonyama and flees, Ngonyama and his gang begin a hunt for him that puts his life and that of his family in danger.

Vusi's wife, Samke is angry that he threw away their one opportunity to get out of poverty and so abandons him. Meanwhile, the National Prosecuting Authority finds out that Vusi is a key witness in their bid to prosecute his former boss, Mr. Adam (a millionaire who had fired Vusi three years earlier because of his refusal to play along with Adam’s corrupt practises). In a bid to stop Vusi from testifying, Mr. Adam uses bribes and threats and then hires people to plant drugs in Vusi's house to discredit his testimony. Vusi manages to evade Ngonyama and his gang for a while, but with the help of a crooked cop, Sergeant Buthelezi, they track Vusi down, kidnap him and torture him to get him to agree to return to the police to retrieve the jewellery.

Meanwhile Mrs Sauders, the rightful owner of the jewellery returns, discovers that her jewellery is missing and with the help of the police is able to link it to Michael. The police track down Ngonyama and a gunfight ensues. Vusi fights Ngonyama and Ngonyama is killed. Vusi saves the day. He is reconciled to his wife and rewarded by Mrs. Saunders while Jeannie, Michael and Mr. Adam end up in prison.
